Caring for alpaca yarn products requires attention and gentle handling, but the effort is well worth it. By following proper washing, drying, and storage techniques, you can maintain the beauty, softness, and longevity of your alpaca garments and accessories. With the right care, your alpaca items will remain a cherished part of your wardrobe for many years to come.

Alpaca fiber is derived from the fleece of alpacas, native to South America. It is naturally soft, hypoallergenic, and warmer than wool. Unlike sheep’s wool, alpaca fibers do not contain lanolin, making them less likely to irritate sensitive skin. Additionally, alpaca yarn is highly resistant to pilling and has a beautiful, natural sheen. However, due to its delicate nature, alpaca fiber must be handled with care. Harsh detergents, excessive agitation, and extreme temperatures can damage the fibers, causing them to lose their softness and shape.

Proper washing techniques will prevent shrinkage and distortion while preserving the softness of alpaca yarn.

Handwashing is recommmended:

Fill a Basin: Use lukewarm water (around 85°F or 30°C). Avoid hot water, as it can cause felting and shrinkage.

Add a Gentle Detergent: Use a mild detergent specifically designed for wool or delicates. Baby shampoo or a mild, chemical-free soap can also work well.

Soak the Item: Submerge the alpaca product in the water and let it soak for about 5–10 minutes. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing, as this can cause felting.

Gently Agitate: Lightly swish the item in the water to remove dirt. Do not wring, twist, or rub the fabric.

Rinse Thoroughly: Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, lukewarm water. Gently press the item to remove excess soap. Repeat as needed.

Remove Excess Water: Lay the garment flat on a clean towel and roll it up to gently squeeze out the water. Do not twist or wring.

While hand washing is preferred, some alpaca products labeled as machine-washable can be cleaned in a washing machine on a delicate cycle.

Follow these steps:

Use a Mesh Laundry Bag: Place the item inside a mesh bag to prevent agitation.

Select Cold Water and Gentle Cycle: Set your washing machine to a delicate or wool cycle with cold water.

Use a Mild Detergent: Avoid regular laundry detergents, which can be too harsh.

Avoid Spinning: Skip the spin cycle to prevent stretching and distortion.

Proper drying is crucial to maintaining the shape and softness of alpaca products.

Lay Flat to Dry: Place the item on a clean, dry towel on a flat surface. Reshape it gently to its original dimensions.

Avoid Hanging: Hanging wet alpaca garments can cause them to stretch and lose shape.

Air Dry Naturally: Allow the item to dry in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight or heat sources, such as radiators or hair dryers.

Flip Occasionally: Turn the item over periodically to ensure even drying.

If your alpaca product gets stained, act quickly to prevent the stain from setting.

Blot, Don’t Rub: Use a clean, damp cloth to blot the stain gently.

Use Mild Soap: Apply a small amount of mild detergent or baby shampoo to the stained area.

Rinse with Cold Water: Avoid hot water, which can set the stain.

Repeat if Necessary: For stubborn stains, repeat the process until the stain lifts.

Proper storage prevents damage and extends the life of your alpaca items.

Clean Before Storing: Always wash your alpaca products before storing to remove any oils, dirt, or potential pests.

Fold, Don’t Hang: Hanging can stretch out delicate fibers. Instead, fold and store in a breathable fabric bag or a storage box.

Use Natural Moth Repellents: Cedar blocks or lavender sachets can help keep moths away.

Avoid Plastic Bags: Plastic traps moisture, which can lead to mildew and odor.

Store in a Cool, Dry Place: Keep alpaca items in a dry environment away from heat and humidity.

Alpaca fibers are naturally resistant to pilling, but occasional pilling can still occur with frequent use.

Use a Fabric Comb: Gently remove pills with a fabric or sweater comb.

Avoid Abrasion: Minimize friction by wearing your alpaca garments with smooth-textured clothing.

Hand Wash Regularly: Proper washing helps prevent excessive fiber loosening that leads to pilling.

Over time, alpaca products may lose some of their softness or become slightly misshapen.

To refresh them:

Steam Gently: Use a handheld steamer or hang the item in a steamy bathroom to relax the fibers.

Brush Lightly: A soft-bristled garment brush can help restore fluffiness.

Shake and Air Out: Hanging the item in fresh air for a few hours can help remove odors and restore freshness.
