Metatron stands out as one of the most enigmatic and intriguing figures. Although lesser known than archangels like Michael and Gabriel, Metatron holds a special place in Jewish mysticism, Christian angelology, and esoteric traditions. But who is Metatron, and why is he considered so significant? 

Metatron’s name does not appear in the canonical texts of the Hebrew Bible, yet he is prominent in later Jewish mystical traditions. His origins are debated, but one of the most widely accepted theories links him to the biblical figure Enoch. According to the Book of Genesis, Enoch was a righteous man who “walked with God” and was taken to heaven without experiencing death (Genesis 5:24). The Jewish mystical text, 3 Enoch, elaborates on this by stating that Enoch was transformed into the angel Metatron, becoming the highest-ranking angel in the heavenly hierarchy.

The name “Metatron” itself is a subject of scholarly debate. Some suggest it derives from the Greek metathronos, meaning “one who serves behind the throne,” while others believe it has roots in Persian or Hebrew traditions. Regardless of its etymology, Metatron is commonly described as the celestial scribe and mediator between God and humanity.

In Jewish mysticism, particularly in the Kabbalah and Merkavah traditions, Metatron is often seen as the “Lesser Yahweh,” a powerful figure second only to God. He is sometimes referred to as the Angel of the Presence, meaning he stands closest to God and carries out divine commands. Some sources even claim that Metatron has the authority to act as God’s representative, delivering messages and judgments to the world.

The Sefer HaZohar, an important Kabbalistic text, describes Metatron as a guide for mystics who seek divine knowledge. He is depicted as a being of immense light, standing at the gateway between the human and divine realms. As a celestial scribe, Metatron records human deeds and maintains the balance of justice in the universe.

Though Metatron is primarily a figure of Jewish mysticism, some Christian and Islamic traditions also acknowledge him. In Christian theology, Metatron is sometimes linked to the Logos (the divine Word) or even to Jesus Christ in mystical interpretations. Some scholars have drawn parallels between Metatron’s intermediary role and Christ’s function as a mediator between God and humanity.

In Islamic mysticism, particularly in Sufi traditions, Metatron is sometimes identified with Idris, a prophet who, like Enoch, was taken to heaven without experiencing death. Though Islamic texts do not explicitly name Metatron, some interpretations suggest that a high-ranking angel with similar characteristics exists within Islamic cosmology.

Unlike angels such as Gabriel or Raphael, who have well-defined appearances, descriptions of Metatron vary widely. Some texts portray him as a massive, radiant being with 36 pairs of wings and innumerable eyes, signifying his omniscience and proximity to God. Others depict him as a divine scribe, holding a celestial book where he records the actions of humankind.Metatron’s connection to sacred geometry and divine knowledge is also significant. In mystical traditions, he is associated with “Metatron’s Cube,” a geometric symbol composed of interconnected circles and lines. This cube is said to represent the fundamental structures of the universe and divine creation. Many believe that meditating on Metatron’s Cube can bring spiritual enlightenment and a deeper understanding of cosmic order.

Metatron’s presence is not limited to ancient religious texts; he also plays a significant role in contemporary esoteric and New Age thought. Many modern spiritualists consider him an archangel who provides guidance, healing, and enlightenment. Some practitioners claim to communicate with Metatron through meditation, channeling, or dreams, seeking wisdom and protection.
